Webinar: global trends and the future of the tidal Thames

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is convening an expert panel webinar on Tuesday, 29 June looking at global trends and the future of the tidal Thames, as part of London Climate Action Week.

Together the panel will consider the influence of trends including rapidly developing maritime technology, climate change, resilience and changes in global cities driven by the pandemic. The panel includes:

  • Edward Glaeser, professor, Harvard University
  • Juliet Mian, technical director, Resilience Shift
  • Emma Page, head of sustainability, University of Exeter
  • Joe Borg, UK&I commercial manager, Lloyd’s Register
  • Dr Tim Moonen, managing director, The Business of Cities
  • Robin Mortimer, chief executive, PLA

This webinar is one of a series the PLA is running as it updates the river development framework, the Thames Vision, out to 2050.

PLA lead for the programme, Alistair Gale, explains:

“The next 30 years are set to see transformative change affecting virtually all aspects of the way we live, as we develop to a low emission, Net Zero economy.

“The global trends debate during London Climate Action Week will look at how the Thames, a critical asset in the heart of the capital city and wider economy, is set to adopt and, in some cases, drive change.

“This is a rare opportunity to step back from the day-to-day and consider the trends that will shape how we make the most of the river in the future. We will hear about the big themes of technology and climate change, and ultimately focus on people. How the global changes will affect communities’ opportunities for work, for travel, for sport, for relaxation will be at the heart of the Thames’ future and the heart of our webinar debate.”

Panellist, Juliet Mian from Resilience Shift, added:

“Ports are critical gateways in our modern, globally interconnected world. They are where land and sea activities intersect as part of critical supply chains, keeping communities supplied with essentials. Ports have a leading role in the transition to net zero emissions, and their resilience in a highly uncertain future will be more important than ever.”

The PLA’s extensive work to explore and respond to a lower emission and more resilient future include: a port trade forecast looking at pathways to decarbonisation out to 2050, an energy demand assessment for sea going and inland vessels and a Sustainable Innovation Fund targeting development proposals for zero emission Thames berth."

The Thames Vision initial engagement phase closes at midday on Wednesday, 14 July 2021. You can share your views and help shape the future development plan for the river via the online survey which can be found here: Thames Vision 2050: Have Your Say | Port of London Authority (pla.co.uk).
