Port of London Authority: Part of the Story of London

One of the many historic images in the exhibition (click on image to enlarge)The story of London's port authority, its people and the river it serves is being showcased in an exhibition at City Hall as part of the Mayor's Story of London festival, which takes place throughout the whole of June.

The contribution of the Port of London Authority (PLA), which celebrates its centenary this year, is being told in the exhibition, The Port of London Authority - a Century of Service in the public areas of City Hall.  The exhibition captures the PLA's history and development since 1909 in a series of images which is part of the month-long festival celebrating London's past, present and future.

PLA chief executive, Richard Everitt, said:

"The Thames is a river for trade, for commuting, for leisure, pleasure and sport.  It's our job to help people make the most of the river in safety.  Over the last hundred years the work of the PLA has been integral to the Story of London, so we are really pleased to share the many different things we have been doing as custodians of the river for the last 100 years."

London Mayor Boris Johnson says:

"It is with great pride that I call London - the world's greatest city - my home. The Story of London is about celebrating the people and communities that have shaped our capital, whilst also telling Londoners and visitors about the vast array of cultural and heritage organisations on their doorstep."

The PLA exhibition is on show at City Hall from 1st to 30th June. It is one of more than 400 events featured in the month-long Story of London festival, which covers history and heritage, art and architecture, design and fashion, music, theatre and film.   • The Port of London Authority (PLA) is responsible for navigational safety and related matters on 95 miles of the tidal Thames from the sea to Teddington in west London
  • The PLA provides navigational, pilotage and other services for users of the Thames
