New chairman for the Port of London Authority
Simon Sherrard is to be the next Chairman of the Port of London Authority (PLA). He succeeds Sir Brian Shaw who completes his third term of office as Chairman on 31 December 2000.
Mr Sherrard’s appointment as PLA Chairman made by the Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions, Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP, is for three years from 1 January 2001.
Simon Sherrard is non-executive Chairman of the Liverpool-based Bibby Line Group, having been Managing Director from 1985 to 1997 and Executive Chairman from 1997 to 2000. He is currently President of the Chamber of Shipping and he sits on the board of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and a number of commercial companies. He was appointed to the PLA board in August 2000.
He started his business career with Samuel Montagu and held a variety of industrial and commercial appointments with the Jardine Matheson Group in the Far East between 1974 and 1985.
Simon Sherrard is 53 and married with four children. He divides his working life between Liverpool and London.
Welcoming the appointment, Sir Brian Shaw said, "I am delighted that a leading figure in shipping is to head the PLA at this exciting stage in the Port’s development, with P&O Ports’ world class container terminal planned for the Shell Haven Oil Refinery site".

NOTES TO EDITORS:
The Port of London Authority (PLA) is a public trust established in 1908 under the Port of London Act. It is the conservator, and navigation and pilotage authority for the 94 miles of the tidal Thames, from Teddington in Middlesex to the sea.
Under the Port of London Act, the Secretary of State for Transport (now DETR) appoints the PLA Chairman. This is a non-executive position.
The Secretary of State, in consultation with the Chairman, also appoints up to seven non-executive members of the Board.
The appointment process is regulated by guidelines set by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (in accordance with the "Nolan rules").
The non-executive members may appoint up to four executive members to the Board.
