Jenny's new mission to get everyone active on the tidal Thames
Making the tidal Thames a hub for sport and recreation for all is the aim of Jenny Cooper, in a new role created by the Port of London Authority (PLA) as part of its long-term Vision for the river.
Passionate about the opportunities watersports provide, Jenny has joined the PLA as sports participation and community outreach manager.
Previously, she worked for the charity London Youth Rowing (LYR), initially as a community coach in east London and most recently as a life skills programme director, working with schools, colleges and clubs across the capital.
Jenny also helped develop LYR’s pioneering Breaking Barriers programme, working with young people in disadvantaged communities to improve their confidence, life skills and employability through rowing.
Her new role will take her from Teddington in the west to Southend in the east, working with London Sport, Kent Sport and Essex Active and others to help grassroots groups attract a wider membership.
One of her first visits was to Richmond Canoe Club, who have recently received a £8,000 grant from the PLA’s new Sports Participation Fund. The club has invested the money in a new fleet of six new kayaks and canoes, as well as buoyancy aids and paddles.
Alistair Gale, the PLA director responsible for delivering its 2035 Thames Vision strategy, said: “Jenny’s appointment shows our determination to make the river an integral part of everyday life in the capital for young and old, regardless of their sporting ability.
“The River Thames is a key asset that can enhance the quality of life for everyone, not just accomplished rowers and paddlers.”
Jenny said: “Through my work with London Youth Rowing, I know the transformational effect getting out on the river can have, particularly on young people who have no family or social links to the capital’s waterway.
“I am hugely excited to be now promoting what the river has to offer to an even wider audience, particularly in less well-off areas.”
