Port of London Authority Apprenticeship Open Day: 30 June 2017

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is inviting over 16s to take a look at its opportunities for apprenticeships at a special Open Day on Friday, 30 June.

The PLA looks after 95 miles of the tidal Thames, from the North Sea through the heart of the historic city to Teddington Lock in West London. This summer, we are recruiting four apprentices: two marine engineers and two marine operatives (deckhands).

The open day, at the PLA’s main engineering workshops in Denton Wharf, Gravesend, will give visitors the chance to see how the PLA’s fleet of more than 40 boats, plus channel-marking lights and buoys are maintained. Tours of the marine engineering workshops are planned, along with a closer look at some of its boats. There will also be an opportunity to meet current apprentices who have first-hand knowledge of working here and information on how to apply for a PLA apprenticeship.

PLA director of human resources, Glenn Witham, said: “Apprenticeships are a great route into work for young people and mean proper training and invaluable experience, as well as a wage.

“Working at the PLA is exciting, as there’s so much variety in what we do. We work in some of the most interesting places on the river in London, Essex and Kent. If you’re over 16 and thinking about your future, we’d love to see you at our open day.”

The salary for these roles is the statutory apprentice wage, dependent upon the successful candidates’ age, and includes 28 days’ paid annual leave and eight paid bank holidays. Hours of work are 35 per week and include time at college.

If you would like to come along to one of the Open Day sessions, you must register your interest by sending a brief email to the PLA no later than Tuesday 27 June 2017: [email protected]. You’ll need to indicate which role you are interested in, detailing whether you’d prefer a morning or afternoon session. The first session starts at 9.30am.

If you can’t attend the Open Day, but still want to apply for an apprenticeship please click http://www.pla.co.uk/assets/fm1106applicationformforapprenticeships.pdf to open the application form. Once complete, please email the form to [email protected].

Closing date for applications for the apprentice positions is Wednesday 19 July 2017.
