Forum

Our Annual Stakeholder Forum, similar to an annual general meeting, took place on 11 May 2021.

During the Forum we announced that work is underway modelling the future of energy demand and supply on the tidal Thames, as we look to shape the zero carbon port and river of the future. This will be a key building block of an updated strategy for the river: Thames Vision 2050.

The future of river use on the Thames is going to be shaped by substantial change as the economy decarbonises, new technologies emerge, trading patterns evolve, and as we recover from the pandemic.

Our port trade forecasts show a decline in oil product cargoes through the 2030s with new opportunities emerging in sustainable fuels. Collectively we need to be ready to respond to this major change and seize the new opportunities that arise. Decarbonisation will be driven by all sectors of the global economy, including of course maritime.

The Thames Energy Study will focus in particular on the changing energy needs of ships calling in the Port of London and smaller vessels working on the River Thames, and what infrastructure is needed to enable the transition.

We will share the findings of the study we shape Thames Vision 2050. The original Vision, launched in mid-2016, covered the period to 2035. We also released a five-year Thames Vision Progress Review.

In addition, we published our latest annual Environmental Report, which reflects progress across air & water quality, resources and biodiversity.
