A new £1.2 million boat has just come into service as part of a hard working fleet of ‘cutters’ that are busy in the Thames estuary every day, delivering crews and pilots to large ships carrying essential cargoes to and from London and the south east.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) this week hosted nine students from St Angela’s Ursuline School in Newham on a trip on the Thames, kicking off a three-year partnership with the school as part of London Youth Rowing’s ‘Breaking Barriers’ campaign.

As the rowing season kicks off, an updated, easy-to-use guide to rowing on the Thames has been launched by the Port of London Authority and Thames Regional Rowing Council (TRRC).

On the second day of Maritime Safety Week 2023, the Port of London Authority (PLA) is taking a lead in creating a positive safety culture, announcing its latest safety campaign, Watch Your Wash, to increase awareness of the potential risks of vessel wash and draw-off on river users along the tidal Thames.

A riverside haven for visiting mariners from all over the world has been giving a helping hand this Christmas by the Port of London Authority (PLA). Every year, Tilbury Seafarers’ Centre volunteers wrap up more than 1,500 parcels for crew members whose ships are calling at the Port of London over the festive period. Many of the visiting seamen have not seen loved ones for months and are really happy to accept gifts at a time of year when they’re most missing home.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has confirmed that last night (Wednesday, 5 October 2016) at around 6.10 pm one of its pilots was involved in an accident while boarding a ship, Sunmi, in Gravesend Reach. PLA teams on duty, the emergency services and the RNLI did all they could subsequent to the accident, but tragically the pilot passed away.

The PLA is joining a drive to encourage young job seekers to look to the Thames for their career.

The last of the cruise ships, sailing vessels and super yachts which came for the Olympics have now been guided down the Thames from central London.
