This challenge was supported by the PLA in celebration of the Authority's Centenary. A team of eight, including six PLA staff, aimed to conquer the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales over a three-day period which saw them travel almost 1300 miles and scale a combined height of 3407 metres.

On 5 to 9 September 2014, Greenwich hosted the largest Tall Ships event on the Thames in 25 years. There were a total of 51 tall ships on the river, with the largest vessel being the Dar Mlodziezy.

Parade of Sail - Tall Ships Regatta 2014

The Paralympic Torch took to the River Thames during the final stages of its epic 24-hour relay from Aylesbury to east London on Wednesday 29th August 2012. The Torch Party boarded the ex-PLA survey vessel Havengore, which transported Winston Churchills coffin on the River Thames during his State Funeral in 1965, at Greenwich. Escorted by a small flotilla of vessels, the Havengore crossed the Thames to the Isle of Dogs where the Paralympic Flame continued its journey to the Olympic Park at Stratford for the Opening Ceremony later that evening.

Paralympics Torch Relay

With the outbreak of the war on 2nd September 1939 the Royal Navy established guard ships, batteries were manned on both banks of the lower river and in the middle of the reaches in the dock and, in industrial areas, barrage balloons were inflated. Everyone was aware that at some point the Thames would become a target. Passive defences in the Port were ready with stringent security measures in place enforced by the Authority’s own police at the docks and by the Thames Division of the Metropolitan Police in the river.

Port at War

Run on a July summer’s evening, the Port of London Challenge is rowed over a 4.4 mile course from HQS 'Wellington' to Chelsea Harbour. The cutters are crewed by six rowers, carrying a cox and passenger.
